The Ohio Lottery and Gambling Addiction

For the vast majority of people who play the Ohio Lottery, it is merely a fun diversion that doesn’t take a significant chunk out of their monthly budget.  And in addition to being exciting to play, for these people who don’t abuse the Ohio Lottery, there is the occasional benefit of also winning a little money every now and then, too.  These people don’t ever spend too much on lotto tickets or scratch off games, and they are satisfied with modest wins of a few bucks every now and the (although they certainly have fun dreaming of multi-million dollar jackpots). Unfortunately, however, there are abundant examples of people who also abuse the Ohio Lottery, and whose playing habits cross into the dangerous realm of gambling addiction.

When many people think about gambling addiction, they don’t think of games like the Ohio Lottery or other state lottos.  Instead, they think of things like casino games or illegal bettting.  But believe it or not, even legal games such as the Ohio Lottery or Mega Millions can be the vehicle of addiction just as easily.  As we said, the vast majority of people who purchase lotto tickets do not abuse the system.   But a select few eventually do become addicted to the games, which is characterized by three symptoms:

  1. They buy so many Ohio Lottery tickets that they are unable to pay for necessities such as food or shelter.
  2. They have unrealistic expectations regarding how good their chances of winning a given lotto really are.
  3. Their abuse of the Ohio Lottery system leads to strained relationships with family and friends.

Ironically, it is usually a big win that kicks off the chain of events that lead to lottery addicts eventually becoming big losers.  If a person is new to the Ohio Lottery, and the first dozen scratch off games they purchase are all losers, then they won’t be very likely to spend much more of their hard-earned cash on something that gives them no returns on the investment.  But if a new player buys an Ohio Lottery scratch off and almost immediately wins a small or medium-sized jackpot, then they may get the wrong impression about what the chances really are of winning from a single ticket.

These players then start purchasing lottery tickets and scratch off games on a much more regular basis, even more than they can afford, thinking that they are bound to win again soon.  If they do win another modest amount, it further solidifies their addiction to the lotto and makes it more likely that they will keep buying.  And if they don’t win any more jackpots, they might continue buying lotto tickets anyway in the hopes that they can get a big win that will let them earn back all the money they have wasted on losing tickets.

Do you see how the cycle works, and how a person can become more and more severely addicted to the Ohio Lottery if they don’t play responsibly?  That’s why it’s always a great idea and very important to be educated and aware of the dangers, no matter how small, every time you play any kind of games of chance . . . including state lotteries!
